How did you get started with Wells Street CrossFit?
When I moved to the city I dropped in at a few different Crossfit gyms to try to find one that I liked and wanted to join. It was an easy choice to join WSCF because the coaches were knowledgeable, the athletes were encouraging, and the WODs were tough.
What is your favorite WOD and/or movement?
I like snatch, rowing, and any squat and a few of my favorite WODs are DT, Fight Gone Bad, and Grace.
What is your least favorite WOD and/or movement?
I do not enjoy pushups or Crossfit Poker.
How long have you been doing CrossFit and what is your proudest CrossFit accomplishment so far?
I have been doing Crossfit for about two years. My proudest Crossfit accomplishments have been PRing my squat and my snatch recently. Both were physical accomplishments but also mental accomplishments.The mental toughness part of Crossfit is one of my favorite parts of the sport. Some days it is just about working out and sweating. Some days it is about pushing your mind and body to do something you have never done and I love that.
What is a goal you hope to accomplish in the next 3 months? 1 year?
My next Crossfit goals are to do 50 double unders unbroken and to do a handstand pushup.
How has Wells Street CrossFit affected your life so far?
WSCF has affected my life in almost every way! I am stronger than I have ever been and I enjoy exercising. I have met many people and have made many friends at the gym. WSCF is what makes Old Town and Chicago feel like home. WSCF is like the Cheers Restaurant of Chicago!
What is something about you that no one at WSCF knows?
Oh boy…this is a tough one! I guess most people do not know that I played water polo (mostly the goalie position) for about 5 and I was named All-American.
Do you have any advice for someone considering WSCF?
If you could do a WOD with anyone, who would it be, and why? My dad and brother. Both of them did Crossfit for years before I started. It would be fun to do a workout together!

You are a teacher in the suburbs, what is your opinion on kids exercising and the current health of kids in America?
The current health of kids in America is abysmal. Most schools underestimate the power of healthy food and exercise in children and the impact of healthy habits on brain growth and brain function.I teach in a school that does value the social and emotional growth of students as much as their academic development. Teaching kids about mental health is super important to me. I weave in lessons about social skills, having a growth mindset, and interpersonal awareness every day. I think teaching about mental health is one step to changing the current health of kids in America.
You joined WSCF when you moved to the city, has being a part of a CrossFit gym helped you settle into a new area easier than if you just belonged to a big box gym?
YES! I think there is a special bond that happens in a Crossfit gym that does not happen in a Globo-type gym. At WSCF people know your name, people want you to PR a lift, people want you to show up to workout, people want you to push yourself on a workout, and people want to grab a drink after a workout!The gym also has events and get togethers (like Wine & WOD, WSCF Trolley, Sausage Saturday) to foster the sense of community at the gym too!
