BURN Spotlight – Justin P
Occupation: Special Education Classroom Assistant
Member at Wells Street Fitness since: March 2017
How did you get started with the BURN program?
I started with the 20-class Groupon (it’s such a great deal!). It gave me a HUGE jumpstart on getting in shape, which was just what I needed. Once the Groupon ended I was a total convert and signed up for a membership.
What is your favorite exercise and/or movement?
What is your least favorite exercise and/or movement?
Burpees are the absolute worst.
What is your proudest BURN accomplishment so far?
When I started in March I felt like I wanted to die in the middle of every class – I was only going to class twice a week and felt incredibly out of shape. Slowly but surely I saw/felt the progress and now I’m just finishing my 2nd week of five back-to-back 6:30am BURN classes. Josh must be tired of seeing me.
What is a goal you hope to accomplish in the next 3 months? 1 year?
Besides maintaining a consistent 4-class week, I hope to improve my double-unders and my nearly non-existent pull-ups.
How has the BURN program affected your life so far?
BURN has forced me into a much healthier lifestyle; physically, mentally, and emotionally. I’m actively making better choices to take care of myself. My diet has changed for the better – eating lean and tons of veggies to make sure I have what I need to get through a class (although I still love pizza sooo much). BURN is getting me into the best shape of my life and I can’t see myself doing it any other way.
What is something about you that no one at Wells Street Fitness knows?
This is the first time in my life that I have been called or even considered myself as an athlete. I’ve always been a musician – singing on stage, playing the piano, directing professional and youth ensembles, etc. It’s a nice change!
Do you have any advice for someone considering either CrossFit or BURN?
Give it a shot. Find your groove. If you like it, make a habit of it.
What is different about BURN versus some of the other classes you have tried?
The group work out has been one of my favorite aspects of this class. Josh can give feedback and fix form as necessary. He’s a fantastic instructor and is incredibly passionate about what he’s doing.
Do you find it difficult to prioritize exercise in your daily schedule? What makes fitness important to you?
I’ve always been a morning person, and making the 6:30am class part of my schedule has actually helped me make it through the second half of the school year. Before starting BURN I was feeling pretty gross and not like myself – I needed a change and knew that taking care of my body was the best way to start. Coming to classes have definitely put me on a good path.
Favorite quote or motto?
“This is your life. Do what you want and do it often.
If you don’t like something, change it.
If you don’t like your job, quit.
If you don’t have enough time, stop watching TV.
If you are looking for the love of your life, stop; they will be waiting for you when you start doing things you love.
Stop over-analyzing, life is simple.
All emotions are beautiful.
When you eat, appreciate every last bite.
Life is simple.
Open your heart, mind and arms to new things and people; we are united in our differences.
Ask the next person you see what their passion is and share your inspiring dream with them.
Travel often; getting lost will help you find yourself.
Some opportunities only come once, seize them.
Life is about the people you meet and the things you create with them, so go out and start creating.
Life is short, live your dream and share your passion.”
We are developing a youth program, based on your experiences, why do you think exercise is important for kids?
In addition to teaching a healthy lifestyle, discipline, teamwork, etc. it’s important for developing adolescents to feel comfortable in their own body. Fitness is a great way of finding/creating/nurturing just that.
